Do you want to be a good salesperson? Wait a second! Who wants to be just 'good' at something? If that's what you're seeking in this arena, then sales is not for you. You should only do what you love, and if you love the challenge of sales and you want to tear the cover off the ball, then you have come to the right place.
The 10 Sales Reputation Rules below will not only lead you in the right direction, then you will separate you from your competition.
1. Stick To Your Word
In any business, the majority of people you come across are going to be average. They will always have an excuse for not getting back to you: "I was busy" "I got caught up" "I'm so sorry, I forgot." The list goes on and on.
Most people would be frustrated that many people are this way, but it's actually a good thing because it allows others to stand out. If you tell someone you're going to call them on Tuesday at 11 a.m. EST and you call them at that exact time, they're going to remember it. If you can continue to deliver on these promises, they are going to make a mental note that you're a reliable person. Of course, when you are seen as reliable, you're going to get more sales.
2. Help Others
Let's say you are selling energy procurement to a school district and you end up in a conversation with the decision-maker about how he wants to go to tonight's basketball game but doesn't have time to look for tickets. The instant you hang up the phone, you buy him two tickets. This might come with a cost but think about the lifelong trust that prospect will have gained. Even if you moved to a different industry, this will always be a connection. And even if it is not a business connection, you likely gained a friend.
3. Be Punctual
People who are punctual tend to be more reliable and productive. Therefore, be punctual. Plain and simple.
4. Overdeliver
If you are supposed to deliver 10 quality leads by the end of the week, deliver 30. Go above and beyond and you will be Top Dog in your office.
5. Clean Up Well
Wear whatever you want at home, but when it's time for business and you're pressing the flesh, make sure your clothes are not wrinkled and you smell good.
6. Pay Attention
You will read some articles that tell you to point your feet toward the person talking and nod your head, but those would be forced actions if you have to think about it. If you are paying attention, you will already be doing those things subconsciously. Either way, the other party will know you are paying attention and appreciate it.
7. Be Genuine
Never sell something you do not believe in. If you are selling non-stick cookware and it feels like a scam to you, get out! Go sell something you truly believe in. Your reputation depends on it.
8. Build Relationships
A lot of salespeople go for big numbers. That's fine, and it can be effective to a degree. However, if you want long-term success, then you need to build relationships. Repeat business is always the key to long-term success.
9. Be Friendly
The days of the aggressive in-your-face salesman are long gone. Always Be Selling, but Always Be Smiling as well.
10. Be Yourself
If you are following a script, you're never going to make it big. Instead of calling someone with the company pitch, just be you. You can begin with, "Hi Jerry. This is Dan from Common Media. Do you have 15 minutes next week to see if we can help you increase your online traffic?" They will usually say, "That's it?" This means they appreciate your brevity because you are respecting their time. And this is good for your reputation.
Conclusion
Follow the 10 tips above and you are going to crush it big in this arena. Remember, it never begins with wanting to make more money. It begins with believing in a product so you can help people. That is genuine.
